Curriculum

Our children are taught all of the subjects of the National Curriculum. This provides them with a strong grounding in a full and balanced curriculum across all subjects from English, Maths and Science, to the range of foundation subjects. These include RE, History, Geography, PE, Art, Music, Modern Foreign Languages, Design Technology (DT), and Drama.

The National Curriculum does not apply to pupils in the Foundation Stage.

The curriculum for our youngest children is organised into seven areas of learning. These include: communication and language; physical development; personal, social and emotional development; literacy; maths; understanding the world and expressive arts and design.

Religious Education

The school follows the Shropshire Agreed Syllabus concerning Religious Education, which may be inspected by parents who should contact the Headteacher.
The two main aspects for RE are learning about religion and learning from religion. Although our studies and discussions are based on Christian ideals, children learn about other religions and cultures and are made aware that we live in a multi-cultural society where other families have beliefs and customs.
To enhance the teaching and learning of RE we arrange:
 visits to places of worship
 the handling of real artefacts
 visits from practising members of different faiths
Parents reserve the right to withdraw their children from RE lessons on religious grounds. Parents who do wish to withdraw their children from RE lessons should contact and speak to the headteacher so that suitable supervisory arrangements can be made.

Sex Education

Aspects of sex education are taught in accordance with the government guidelines as an important part of the children’s curriculum.
Children in Year 6 are invited to watch a video with the headings, ‘healthy living’, ‘understanding feelings and functions’ and ‘getting along with others’. Appropriate work and discussion is carefully matched to the ages of children being taught.
Parents are notified by letter as to when their children are to be given the sex education curriculum and also invited to view the content of the films and other materials should they want to.
Parents have the right to withdraw their child(ren) from all or part of sex education programmes offered by school. A letter should be written to the head teacher explaining which aspects of sex education the child(ren) should not undertake.
