Reading and Writing
At Weston Rhyn, we want every child to develop a genuine love of reading. We inspire children to explore a wide range of books, authors and texts, helping them discover new ideas, experiences and perspectives.
We believe that strong reading skills are the foundation for successful learning and have a positive impact across the whole curriculum. For this reason, reading is a high priority throughout our school.
We support children to become confident, fluent and independent readers who read for both enjoyment and learning. Children are exposed to a variety of text types and genres, including fiction, non-fiction, poetry, magazines, newspapers, posters and digital texts.
Our aim is for every child to develop the skills, confidence and enthusiasm needed to become a lifelong reader who reads with curiosity, understanding and enjoyment.
'Reading is fundamental to education. Proficiency in reading, writing and spoken language is vital for pupils’ success. Through these, they develop communication skills for education and for working with others: in school, in training and at work. Pupils who find it difficult to learn to read are likely to struggle across the curriculum, since English is both a subject in its own right and the medium for teaching. This is why the government is committed to continuing to raise standards of literacy for all.'
We provide children with a variety of Reading experiences, supporting and guiding them, but also ensuring they have opportunities to access high-quality texts independently.
Forming clear connections between Reading and Writing is a key aspect of our curriculum and our planning cycle ensures that children are developing their skills in tandem.
